NEW ORLEANS — Charlene Goreau and Yi Chen Pao gave strong singles performances Sunday in Xavier University of Louisiana’s 4-0 women’s loss to Tulane at City Park / Pepsi Tennis Center.
When the Green Wave clinched the dual match, Goreau was still on court with a 6-3, 1-2 lead against Kyla Klier at the top singles flight, and Pao was tied at 6 in the first set with Sofia Kurtz at No. 6.
The other unfinished match was at No. 3 doubles, where Pao and Lyndsey Clark trailed 5-4 against Klier and Christina Sisti, Tulane’s winningest doubles team this season at 18-8. But the Green Wave (22-6) won the doubles point with a pair of 6-2 victories.
Pao and Clark, both freshmen, remained unbeaten as a doubles team. They’re 3-0.
Tulane clinched when Ivone Alvaro beat Brandi Nelson 6-3, 6-1 on the third court and extended her singles win streak to 11.
Tulane is ranked 48th in NCAA Division I. XULA (6-9) is ranked ninth in the NAIA. All the Gold Nuggets’ losses are to NCAA DI opponents or ranked NAIA teams. The Gold Nuggets have beaten four ranked NAIA teams.
“Today’s match was all about us trying to regroup and just show the best effort we can,” XULA coach Alan Green said. “Tulane has its best team post-Katrina, and (coach) Terri (Sisk) has done a great job with them this year. If we can show this kind of effort going forward, we can make some noise in the NAIA.”
Both XULA teams will travel to Mississippi to play Jackson State at 5 p.m. Monday.
