HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Xavier University of Louisiana men’s tennis, ranked second in the NAIA, ended a 12-day layoff Friday with a 7-2 victory against sixth-ranked William Carey.

The XULA women, ranked 14th, lost 6-3 to 12th-ranked William Carey.

The XULA men (6-3) earned their third team victory of the season against a top-10 opponent. Catalin Fifea, Tushar Mandlekar, Antoine Richard and Karan Salwan won in doubles and singles for the Gold Rush; Fifea clinched the dual with his 6-4, 6-2 No. 3 singles victory against Hugo Robuchon.

In the women’s dual, the Gold Nuggets (4-6) got victories from Charlene Goreau and Brandi Nelson at No. 2 doubles — they won for the fourth time in their last five matches — and from Nelson and Sha’Nel Bruins in singles. Jelena Dordan clinched for William Carey (4-2) with a 6-2, 6-3 No. 1 singles victory against Goreau.

William Carey’s men, tied for first place in the Southern States Athletic Conference, are 5-3.

The matches were played at Southern Miss Tennis Complex, but some of the women’s matches were completed at nearby Tatum Park because the Southern Miss facility does not have lights.
