Waco, TX – Two big series victories helped LSUA players Danelle Billings and Kasey Cazares sweep the Red River Athletic Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week awards, respectively, the conference office announced Monday.
Billings, a junior designated player from Nixa, Missouri, was nine of 17 for the week at the plate, a week where LSUA won two crucial RRAC series. She had a home run in each games of Monday’s doubleheader against Our Lady of the Lake, where the Generals completed a four-game series sweep of the Saints. Against the #18-ranked Jaguars, game three was her game as she went three for four at the plate with a double and three RBIs. She drove in a total of eight runs in the six games, while coming around to score three times herself. Billings currently leads the RRAC in the three “triple crown” categories of batting average (.467), home runs (9) and RBIs (36).
Cazares, a freshman pitcher from Calexico, California, made three different appearances in the circle for LSUA in the six games, all in relief. In the process, she picked up a pair of wins and a save. She picked up wins on Monday against Our Lady of the Lake, where she threw 3.2 innings of no hit ball to allow the Generals to come back and win. In the second game of the series against the Jaguars, she didn’t allow a hit in two innings of work as the LSUA bats came alive late to get the win, then she finished out the series win against UHV as she threw 2.2 innings, allowing only one hit and one run to preserve the 4-3 win. She struck out eight batters overall in the week.
The #22-ranked Generals (24-6, 7-1 RRAC) head back on the road this weekend for a conference series against Huston-Tillotson. First pitch against the Rams is set for 1:00 P.M. on Friday at Krieg Fields.
