GCAC Women’s Basketball Recap: SUNO edges Dillard

NEW ORLEANS (GCAConf.com) – A couple of close finishes highlighted today’s action with SUNO nipping Dillard and Talladega holding off Xavier. Edward Waters reinserted itself into the conference race with a win over Philander Smith.

NEW ORLEANS – Southern University at New Orleans (6-7, 1-1 GCAC) defeats Dillard (7-9, 2-1), 55-54: SUNO held the Lady Bleu Devils to five points in the fourth quarter as they rallied from a 15-point deficit to earn its first conference win of the season while handing Dillard its first loss. Dillard led 34-27 at the half, but committed 24 turnovers that led to 17 points for the visiting Lady Knights. SUNO also outpaced the Lady Bleu Devils in second chance points (11-6) and bench scoring (19-10). Dillard missed 12 of its 24 free throw attempts and leading scorer Alena Evans was held to five points, tying her season-low. Evans did set a career-high with 17 rebounds, eight on the offensive glass. Rayvin Miller had a season-low 14 points to lead the Lady Knights, but scored the game-winner with seven seconds remaining. Shantrell Lumar had a chance to tie the game at the line with no time on the clock but missed the second of two free throws.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Edward Waters (14-4, 2-2) defeats Philander Smith (10-8, 2-3), 69-47: Edward Waters outscored the visiting Lady Panthers in all four quarters on its way to a 22-point victory at the Adams-Jenkins Center. The win gave the Lady Tigers a split with Philander Smith, who beat Edward Waters at home 57-46 on Jan. 2. Kyeshia Dawkins scored 20 points or more for the first time since she posted 22 on Dec. 12, 2015 against Clark Atlanta University. Her nine assists set a new career best. The Lady Tigers have won two straight and five out of their last seven. Philander Smith lost its second straight game and is an 80-79 double overtime win over SUNO from a four game losing streak. Juquecia Chaney was held to five points; it was her first game with less than 10 points in her last seven contests. Chaney and Brittany Leonard committed nine of the Lady Panthers 25 turnovers.

TALLADEGA, Ala. — No. 21 Talladega (13-3, 2-0) defeats No. 13 Xavier (13-6, 2-1), 54-47: Talladega held the Gold Nuggets to 14 points in the first half and built an 18-point second half advantage before holding on for the 54-47 victory. In a game that featured three of the GCAC’s top eight scorers, neither team played particular well on the offensive end. Xavier’s Whitney Gathright was held to seven points, and the conference’s highest scoring duo Shakeena Benton and Tajanee Wells combined for just 17 points. Talladega shot 28 percent from the field with Xavier shooting a season-low tying 25 percent. The win puts the Lady Tornadoes alone atop the conference standings for the first time since the end of the 2013-14 season. They have won three games in a row and five of their last six. Talladega is now 2-3 against ranked teams this season. Xavier’s loss snapped a four game win streak for the Gold Nuggets as they fell to 4-3 against teams in the NAIA Division I Top 25.
