NEW ORLEANS, La. (GCAConf.com) – Three important games early in the conference schedule today. Home teams dominated the action, winning all three games by double figures.

NEW ORLEANS — Dillard (10-6, 2-1 GCAC) defeats Southern University at New Orleans (5-8, 0-2), 70-60: After losing their conference opener against Tougaloo, the Bleu Devils have won their last two GCAC games. Dillard rode a 30-18 halftime lead to hold off the Knights, who have now lost three straight.
This is the first time that Dillard has won back-to-back games against conference opponents since they beat Xavier and SUNO in the first two rounds of the 2013 GCAC tournament. The Bleu Devils had not accomplished that feat in the regular season since 2009. SUNO outshot Dillard 48 percent to 37 percent, but the Bleu Devils held a huge advantage on the glass as they outrebounded the Knights 44-28. Dillard also converted 25 of 37 free throws compared to just 5 of 14 for SUNO.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Edward Waters (8-10, 2-2) defeats Philander Smith (10-10, 3-2), 80-66: After losing in heartbreaking fashion to the Panthers in their conference opener 74-75, Edward Waters bounced back to earn a season split with Philander Smith this afternoon. Philander Smith was playing without leading scorer Ronald March, and they struggled to put points on the board, shooting 42 percent. The Tigers led 36-29 at the half and were able to build their lead to as many as 23 points by shooting 64 percent in the second half. Edward Waters’ balanced attacked produced four players in double figures. The Tigers current two-game win streak ties their season high. Philander Smith falls to 3-8 on the road.

TALLADEGA, Ala. — No. 8 Talladega (15-3, 2-0) defeats No. 14 Xavier (14-6, 1-2), 70-55: The Tornadoes defeated the Gold Rush for the fifth consecutive time as Xavier was unable to find a consistent second scoring option on the road. Morris Wright scored a career-high 28 points for the Rush, but none of his other teammates scored more than seven points. Xavier has lost two straight regular season GCAC games for the first time since losing to Talladega and Philander Smith last February, and at 1-2 is off to its worst start in conference play since opening 0-3 in the 2009-10 season. Talladega extended its current winning streak to 10 games and improved to 8-1 at home this season. Qua Doster had 18 points to lead the Tornadoes and is averaging 16.5 points per game against conference opponents, up from 13.9 overall. Talladega improves to 3-1 against ranked foes while the Rush fall to 0-2. These two teams meet again in New Orleans on Jan. 25.
