New Orleans, La. (GCAConf.com) – The Gulf Coast Athletic Conference announced today its Preseason All-GCAC Team along with its choice for preseason player of the year  and it’s preseason coaches’ poll for the 2015-16 women’s basketball season.  Selections are made through a vote of the league’s coaches who are not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes or teams.

The Xavier Gold Nuggets were the coaches’ choice to win the GCAC championship for the 14th time in school history.  Last season Xavier finished second in the conference during the regular season and was GCAC tournament runner-up.

Talladega College guard/forward Tajanee Wells (pictured at left) was a near unanimous selection as Preseason Player of the Year, earning six of seven first place votes.

Joining Wells on the Preseason All-GCAC Team are Whitney Gathright (Xavier), Alena Evans (Dillard), Montoria Atkinson (Tougaloo), and Rubyunnia McHenry (Philander Smith).  Wells was last season’s GCAC Newcomer of the Year as well as a First Team All-GCAC selection.  Gathright and Evans were also members of the All-GCAC First Team, while Atkinson was last season’s Freshman of the Year and a member of the All-GCAC Second Team.

Wells was the only sophomore named to the All-GCAC team and helped Talladega advance to the semifinals of the 2015 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Basketball Championship.  She was also selected to the All-Tournament team.  Wells finished second in the GCAC in scoring (17.1) during the 2014-15 season, was fifth in double-doubles (7), and eighth in rebounding (7.32).
