HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana right-hander Corey Gaconi was named Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week, presented by UniversalCoin.com, the conference office announced Monday.
After giving up a home run to start Saturday’s game against Lamar, Gaconi rebounded to shut down the Cardinals the rest of the way. tossing a complete game in Southeastern’s 4-1 win.
The sophomore from New Orleans (Brother Martin High School) tossed a complete game, allowing just the one run on six hits. Gaconi did not walk a batter and struck out five. During the game, the right-hander had strings of seven, eight and eight consecutive batters retired.
With the win, Gaconi improved to 2-0 this season and helped the Lions extended their winning streak to 10 consecutive games.
Gaconi was previously named pitcher of the week by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association for his outing March 4 against Seton Hall in the Cox Diamond Invitational.
McNeese infielder Matt Gallier was named Southland Conference Hitter of the Week. The third baseman hit .500 (8-for-16) with five runs, one double, three home runs and five RBIs to help the Cowboys go 3-1 on the week, including a three-game sweep of Southland foe Stephen F. Austin.
Each school’s sports information director nominates and votes for the players of the week, but is not permitted to vote for his or her own player.
Southeastern returns to the road Wednesday, traveling to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to face No. 4-ranked LSU at Alex Box Stadium in a game broadcast on the SEC Network+.
