LAKE CHARLES – Former McNeese golfer and the 2015 Southland Conference and Louisiana Freshman of the Year, Bob MacIntyre, has been named to the initial 19-man Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup Team, the R&A announced this week.
The R&A, together with the USGA, governs the sport of golf worldwide.
The R&A will cut the team down to 10 players who will face the United States team at The Los Angeles Country Club in September. The 10-man GB&I squad will be looking to retain the Walker Cup it won in 2015 at Royal Lytham & St. Annes.
The final selection of players will take place in August and the 46th Walker Cup Match is scheduled for Sept. 9-10.
MacIntyre landed a spot on the initial 19-man team after he placed second at The Amateur at Roayl Porthcawl. He fell to champion Scott Gregory who is also on the team.
Since leaving McNeese to return home to Scotland and pursue a European career, MacIntyre has excelled in his play. He ranked No. 3 in the European Golf Ranking in 2016.
He had a second place finish at the 2016 British Amateur, was fourth at the 2016 European Amateur Championships and finished sixth at the 2016 European Nations Cup, just to name a few of his finishes.
While at McNeese, he set a new school single-season record for average score with a 71.78 mark and was the team’s top finisher at the Southland Conference Championships, tying for ninth place.
He helped guide McNeese to the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional where he placed 13th overall.
