WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Southeastern Louisiana women’s tennis team closed out its trip to New York with a hard-fought loss to Fordham in non-conference action Friday night at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center on the United States Military Academy campus.

Southeastern fell to 3-4 overall with the loss. Fordham improved to 7-1 by winning all three doubles matches and six singles matches.

“We played much better today than we did yesterday,” Southeastern head coach Jason Hayes said. “We’ve played four consecutive matches against very good competition. We expect the work we’ve done and improvements we’ve made to show as we return home for key Southland Conference matches.

The most hotly-contested doubles match was on the No. 1 court. In a valiant effort, the SLU duo of juniors Dalina Dahlmans and Fleur Holtkamp pushed the Fordham tandem of Carina Ma and Estelle Wong to a tiebreaker before ultimately falling just short, 7-6 (7-5).

Fordham clinched the match with straight-set wins on courts 1, 2 and 4. The other three singles matches were stretched to three sets. On No. 5, Gianna Insogna held off Dahlmans, 6-2, 0-6, 6-2.

Lion junior Madina Vorotnikova saw Mayu Sato rally past her at No. 3 for a 5-7, 6-2, 10-5 victory. Vorotnikova’s fellow junior Natalie Duran also saw a similar rally, as she dropped a 2-6, 7-5, 10-5 decision to Destiny Grudin on No. 6.

Southeastern will be back in action on Wednesday, traveling to Nicholls for a 2 p.m. Southland Conference match in Thibodaux.
