Dillard University establishes Sports Hall of Fame

NEW ORLEANS– The biggest sports weekend at Dillard University just grew with the establishment of the Dillard University Sports Hall of Fame. The inaugural class will be inducted at the Billy Ray Hobley Scholarship Gala, during the 2018 Allstate Sugar Bowl Bleu Devil Classic Weekend. The hall of fame has a goal to promote a historical legacy of the accomplishments of Dillard University alumni student-athletes.

“The excitement on campus during the Bleu Devil Classic is already unreal,” Dr. Kiki Baker Barnes, director of athletics, said. “And the addition of the hall of fame makes the weekend even more special.” She added that the department sought to honor former Bleu Devil greats to a degree beyond the individual awards that are presented at the gala. The 10th Annual Billy Ray Hobley Scholarship Gala, is set for Friday, January 19-20, 2018.

The Dillard University Sports Hall of Fame (DUSHOF) was established to preserve the appreciation of the tradition of student athletics and to document those activities as an integral part of the the University’s history. The DUSHOF committee members include Dr. Robin Martin, former Athletic Director; Dr. Warren Jones, ‘71; Ronald Henderson, ‘63; Patricia Simpson, ‘68; Bishop Alfred L. Norris, ‘60, Joshua Williams, ‘91; Eugene Lamb, ‘71, and Jim White, a long-time supporter of the University.

Dillard has a linage of excellence in sports that has had an international impact, from NBA Champions, to members of the Harlem Globetrotters, to former athletes who made it their life’s work to improving other’s lives.

Barnes said: “The establishment of the Dillard University Sport Hall of Fame comes during one of the most successful periods in Dillard University athletics and it will not only solidify the legacy of former athletes who have been excellent in their postgraduate careers, but also to preserve the legacy of those who have contributed to Dillard’s tradition of excellence and national prominence in sport.”

Nomination criteria and requirements include the following:

-Must have participated, as a student-athlete, in one or more Dillard University intercollegiate sports for a minimum of two (2) years.
-Individual or team athletic accomplishments documented by the Dillard University athletic department.
-Must be at least four years removed from the University

*Only Dillard University alumni can make a formal nomination to the Dillard University Sports Hall of Fame
