Demons hand out awards to recognize outstanding 2016 performers

NATCHITOCHES – Seniors De’Mard Llorens and JeMarcus Marshall received top honors for their efforts in the 2016 Northwestern State football season when team recognition ceremonies were held during the annual Demon Football Awards event Saturday.

Llorens, a running back who was the Demons’ only first-team All-Southland Conference selection, and Marshall, a defensive end, received the two premiere awards. They were named Joe Delaney Leadership Award winners, for offense and defense respectively, making them two of four permanent team captains. Llorens was chosen Offensive Most Valuable Player while Marshall took Defensive MVP honors.

Also named Delaney Leadership Award recipients were senior offensive guard Terrance Boyd and senior safety Adam Jones.

Junior kicker Eric Piccione won Special Teams MVP honors.

Senior safety Darius Poullard was the recipient of the prestigious Lester Latino Award, honoring a Demon captain and N-Club Hall of Fame member who played from 1966-69. The award is given by the coaching staff to a senior who displays unselfishness, relentless effort, leadership, and exemplary character.

Senior walk-on Okezie Adim-Madumere was the winner of the Chris Waddell Award, presented annually to a walk-on who exemplifies the same qualities as the Latino Award.

Marshall received the Career Academic Achievement Award for graduating with a 3.2 GPA.

The Academic MVP for carrying a perfect 4.0 GPA was redshirt freshman defensive end Desmond Prejean.

Jones was the winner of the Kirt Straughter Trident Award given to the player who leads the team in preseason strength, conditioning and agility testing.

Junior receiver Cameron Lazare and senior defensive tackle Garron Featherston won the Most Improved Awards. Newcomer of the Year honors went to tight end Lucas Morgan, safety Austin Balthazor and special teams standout Ryan Reed.

Da’Von Smith and Stanley Woodley were presented Scout Team MVP honors.

Recognized as members of the Demon Deacon Leadership Council were seniors Jahvez Barnes, Boyd, Featherston, Ralpheal Green, Brooks Haack, Cameron Hussey, Jones, Chris Jones, Llorens, Marshall, Tuff McClain, Poullard, Shakeir Ryan, Shawn Stephens and Ryan Woehlert.

Sam Goodwin Link Awards for showing great effort, discipline, courage and toughness went to Balthazor, Darrien Batiste, Boyd, Featherston, Hussey, Zak Krolzyk, Lazare, Llorens, Marshall, Morgan, Poullad, Ryan, Stephens, Woehlert and offensive lineman Chris Zirkle, the Demons’ Academic All-District honoree.
