Delgado sweeps two games Sunday to beat Baton Rouge, earn 2017 Region XXIII Title

METAIRIE, La. – Delgado defeated Baton Rouge Community College in a doubleheader Sunday to earn the Region XXIII Title at the Shrine on Airline.

Baton Rouge entered the weekend with a 3-1 series lead before the Dolphins swept the final three games in the best-of-seven-game series to earn its eighth consecutive conference title.

In the first contest Sunday, Game 6 of the series, Baton Rouge struck first with a run in the sixth inning, scoring on a groundout to take a 1-0 lead. Delgado plated three runs in the eighth following a leadoff walk by Daniel Lahare, who scored on a double by Matt Rykaczewski to tie the game. Rykaczewski scored on a home run by Blake Freeman, which lifted the Dolphins to a 3-1 lead.

Baton Rouge slipped in a run in the ninth inning when John Mauldin reached on an infield error, stole two bases, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Aiden Hodges before the rally fell short enroute to Delgado’s 3-2 victory. The win tied the best-of-seven series and forced Game 7.

Delgado starter Chris Turpin pitched the complete game for the Dolphins to earn the win on the mound, holding the Bears to two runs on five hits.

Baton Rouge opened Game 7 with three consecutive singles by Seth Daugherty, John Mauldin, and Aiden Hodges. Daugherty scored on Hodges’ single and Mauldin scored on a wild pitch to take the early 2-0 lead.

In the third, Delgado’s JP LaGreco singled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Blake Way to cut the lead in half. The following inning, Tony Valdes, Brandt Broussard, and Daniel Lahare each reached on walks before JP LaGreco’s groundout scored Valdes to tie the game. Broussard scored on a passed ball to take the 3-2 lead.

In the sixth, Brandt Broussard led off with a single, advanced on a groundout, and scored on double by JP LaGreco. Michael Smith’s double in the sixth plated Mauldin and Hodges for Baton Rouge to tie the game 4-4.

Blake Freeman and Blake Way led off the Delgado seventh with walks, advanced on a sacrifice by Tyler Thompson, and scoring on a two run double by Tony Valdes to retake the lead. Brandt Broussard followed with a double to score Valdes. Broussard scored on a single by Daniel Lahare to lift the Delgado lead to four runs. Delgado added a run in the eighth when Tyler Thompson was hit by pitch and scored on a double by Tony Valdes.

Baton Rouge added a run in the eighth when Hunter David walked and scored on a single by Bo Barrilleaux. Delgado’s final two runs came in the top of the ninth on a two-run single by Blake Freeman, scoring Daniel Lahare and JP LaGreco for the final two runs enroute to Delgado’s 11-5 victory. Blayne Haro picked up the win in relief of starter Jonah Manuel. Donovan Goatley closed the game.

With the win, Delgado earns the 2017 NJCAA Region XXIII Division I Championship and advances to the South Central District Championship, to be hosted by the Region XVI Champion in Missouri on May 19-21.

Delgado’s Region XXIII Title marks the Dolphins’ eleventh title over the past twelve seasons.
