Delgado Baseball opened its 2017 season Saturday with a twinbill against Bishop State (Alabama) at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium.
In the first game, Bishop State scored two runs in the third inning to take an early 2-0 lead over the Dolphins. Delgado answered with a four-run fourth inning following back-to-back walks by JP LaGreco and Matt Rykaczewski. They advanced on a single by Christian and scored on RBI singles by Brandt Broussard, Ty Thompson, and Anthony Valdes. Bishop added a run in the fourth when Garrett Kudlack singled and later scored on an outfield error.
In the fifth, Simon Prevot’s double scored JP LaGreco, who opened the inning with a walk. Christian Clayton’s sacrifice fly the next at-bat scored Matt Rykaczewski, who reached on a single. Prevot scored on a wild pitch for a seventh Delgado run. Bishop State added three runs in the sixth on a double by Turner Inhoff and Yasser Sanatana’s homerun. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Daniel Lahare walked and scored on a fielder’s choice by Simon Prevot. JP LaGreco reached on an intentional walk and later scored on a wild pitch. Christian Clayton’s double scored Prevot and Brandt Broussard’s single scored Clayton for the Dolphins final four runs of the game enroute to an 11-6 win. Jace Nini picked up his first win of the season on the mound with Tristan Babin, Christian Latino, and Chris Turpin appearing in relief. Turpin earned the save.
In game two, Bishop State struck first with Yasser Santana’s single in the second inning, which scored Cayman Disher. Delgado answered with two runs after Christian Clayton and Tristan Babin reached on a back-to-back singles, scoring on two more singles by Chip Bonura and Justin Ory. Babin singled again in the third to score JP LaGreco, who walked to open the inning.
In the fourth, Justin Ory reached on a fielder’s choice and later scored on an error. Daniel Lahare reached on a double and scored on JP LaGreco’s double the next at-bat. Delgado’s final two runs came in the fifth when Simon Prevot walked and Brandt Broussard reached as a hit batter, both later scoring on a groundout by Chip Bonura and a sacrifice fly by Justin Ory.
Bishop State’s Peyton Whitehead singled in the sixth to allow two additional Wildcat runs to score before Delgado closed the 7-3 victory. Adam Nelson earned the win, pitching five innings with Hayden Adams and Donovan Goatley appearing in relief. Goatley retired the only batter he faced to end the game.
Delgado (2-0) will travel to Wesson, Mississippi Tuesday to face Copiah-Lincoln. The Dolphins return to Kirsch-Rooney Stadium next Thursday through Sunday, hosting College of St. Joseph and Pensacola State College in the annual “Rags” Scheuermann Memorial Tournament.
