Delgado dropped its conference opener against Baton Rouge Community College in a 5-2 decision Saturday at Pete Goldsby Field in Baton Rouge.

Brandt Broussard walked to open the game, advanced on a single by Daniel Lahare, and scored on a single by Chip Bonura to give the Dolphins the early 1-0 lead. In the fourth, Baton Rouge’s JT Mauldin’s solo homerun tied the game 1-1. Delgado answered with a go-ahead run in the fifth following a walk by Anthony Valdes, a double by Brandt Broussard, and a sacrifice fly by JP LaGreco.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Bears reached base on two back-to-back errors and a single. A run scored on an sacrifice fly by JT Mauldin and an outfield error, followed by and RBI single by Hunter David as the Bears took a 4-2 lead. The Bears added another run in the seventh on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by Keith Meier. The Dolphins left runners on base in each of the last five innings but failed to rally enroute to Baton Rouge’s 5-2 win.

Baton Rouge’s Dillon Miller picked up the win on the mound with Delgado starter Jace Nini suffering the loss. Christian Latino appeared in relief for two innings for the Dolphins.

The best-of-seven game conference series moves to New Orleans Sunday with a 3:00 game at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium.
