Delgado defeats Baton Rouge 5-4 to extend Region XXIII series to sixth game

Delgado defeated Baton Rouge Community College 5-4 Saturday in Game 5 of the 2017 Region XXIII Championship Series at the Shrine on Airline in Metairie, Louisiana.

After both teams went scoreless for the first two innings, Delgado struck first in the third inning on a two-run homerun by JP LaGreco, that also scored Daniel Lahare, who reached on a two-out single. The Dolphins added two runs in the sixth when Tristan Babin reached on a double, later scoring on a single by Blake Way. Way advanced on an error and scored on Tyler Thompson’s sacrifice fly to expand the Delgado lead to 4-0.

Baton Rouge scored two in the seventh following a leadoff single by Mossy Mueller and a double by Nico Cucci. Mueller scored on an infield error and Cucci scored on John Mauldin’s sacrifice fly to cut the Delgado lead to 4-2.

In the eighth, Delgado’s Anthony Valdes singled and scored on a single by Daniel Lahare for a fifth Delgado run.

In the ninth, Baton Rouge’s Nico Cucci led off with a walk, advanced on a double by Tyler LaPorte, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Seth Daugherty. LaPorte scored when Aiden Hodges reached on a fielder’s choice to put the Bears within a run before Delgado closed the game for the 5-4 victory.

Dolphins starter Jace Nini picked up the win with Kyle Flettrich earning the save in relief, closing the final three innings.

With the win, the two teams will meet at the Shrine on Airline Sunday at noon for Game 6. If Delgado wins, the If-Necessary Game 7 of the series would immediately follow. The winner of the series advances to the South Central District regional on May 18-21 in Missouri.
