Delgado defeats Baton Rouge 12-6 to tie Region XXIII series

Delgado defeated Baton Rouge Community College 12-6 Sunday at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium in game two of the 2016 Region XXIII Division I series.

Baton Rouge scored the game’s first runs in the first inning on a single by Aiden Hodges. Delgado answered in the bottom of the inning when Brandt Broussard and JP LaGreco reached on singles and scored on a double by Chip Bonura to tie the game 2-2.

In the second, the Bears reached on back-to-back singles before JT Mauldin doubled to give Baton Rouge a 4-2 lead.

Delgado’s Tyler Thompson reached on a single in the bottom of the inning and advanced when Anthony Valdes reached on an infield error and both runs later scored on a single by JP LaGreco to tie the game. Matt Rykaczewski singled to score Brandt Broussard, who reached on a walk, to give the Dolphins a one run lead.

Rykaczewski later added a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly to score Broussard, who reached on a single, giving Delgado a 6-4 lead.

In the sixth, Bo Barrilleaux’s two run single added two runs for Baton Rouge to tie the game at six. In the bottom frame, Delgado batted around to plate six runs following six hits, including doubles by Brandt Broussard and JP LaGreco and a two-run infield error to give the Dolphins the 12-6 lead and the eventual victory.

Chris Turpin picked up the win on the mound for Delgado, pitching six complete innings with Kyle Flettrich appearing the final three innings in relief to earn the save.

Brooks Southall suffered the loss for the Bears in relief of starter Keith Meier.

With the win, Delgado ties the best-of-seven game series. The series moves to Baton Rouge on Saturday and returns to New Orleans on Sunday. Delgado will travel to Faulkner State College this Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader.
