Delgado Baseball garners numerous postseason honors

Delgado Baseball continues to be recognized for its numerous accomplishments on and off of the field following its memorable 2016 campaign.

All-America accolades
Two members of the program, Daniel Lahare and Laine Fontenot, were recognized as NJCAA All-America selections. Outfielder Daniel Lahare was named Second Team and pitcher Laine Fontenot received Honorable Mention accolades.

Academic Awards
Following stellar performances in the classroom, two baseball student-athletes were recognized as NJCAA Academic Award recipients. Honoring academic performance throughout each individual’s collegiate career, there are three classifications of the NJCAA Academic Student-Athlete¬†Awards based on the cumulative GPA qualifications.

CJ Avrard received the NJCAA Pinnacle Award for Academic Excellence after posting a 4.0 GPA. Avrard was also named a Chancellor’s Honors Graduate during Delgado Commencement exercises last May for his perfect GPA.

Outfielder Robbie Podorsky received the NJCAA Award for Exemplary Academic Achievement (3.6-3.79 GPA). Robbie graduated with an Associate’s Degree in General Studies this past May.

Of the 57,472 student-athletes that participated in the NJCAA during the 2015-16 academic year, 7.98 percent earned national academic honors.

All-Academic Team
In addition to its numerous on-field accolades, the entire 2016 team was recognized as an NJCAA Academic Team for accumulating a 3.0 combined grade point average. The team boasted ten sophomores who achieved their Associate’s degrees.

ABCA/Diamond Regional Coach of the Year
Head Coach Joe Scheuermann was recognized by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) as a regional coach of the year for the South Central District.
