Over the course of the last month, members of the Delgado Baseball program traveled to Baton Rouge, Greenwell Springs, Gonzales, Sorrento, and Lafayette in a Delgado “Care-a-van” as part of a combined effort to deliver care packages to groups and families affected by the recent flooding in Louisiana.

The care packages, which consisted of toiletries, cleaning supplies, clothing, school supplies, and other necessities, were compiled using items donated by Delgado Baseball families, as well as other groups from across the Delgado family, including Charity Association of Student Nurses, Delgado Criminal Justice Students, and other individual faculty and staff donations. In addition to the care packages, gift cards collected from Delgado student-athletes and college staff, as well as the Junior College World Series Host Committee in Grand Junction, Colorado were also dispersed to help these families during this time of need.

So far, the Delgado Cares project has directly assisted over thirty families, including current Delgado student-athletes, alumni, Louisiana Community and Technical College System (LCTCS) staff, Family Promise of Acadiana, school students, and other groups and families with ties to Delgado. Items were also donated to supply stations in Gonzales that are preparing care packages to distribute to the flood victims.

Delgado Athletic Director Joe Scheuermann was extremely proud of how the student-athletes and staff stepped up to the plate for the project. “Delgado Athletics values our strong ties to our community and we’re grateful to be able to help these families during these tough times, much like our program was assisted following Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The outpouring of support from our Delgado family and others in the community has been outstanding. A very special thank you to the National Junior College World Series committee for reaching out to assist as well.”

Special thanks to Emma Scheuermann, Tyler Scheuermann, Nataly Scheuermann, Jeannie Lagarde, and Donna Barthel for helping organize the efforts and deliveries.

A special thank you to everyone who has made this project possible as The Community’s Home Team shows that Delgado Cares!
