NEW ORLEANS – Delgado Community College is pleased to introduce its Spring 2017 Baseball schedule. The Dolphins’ 2017 campaign is slated to begin Saturday, February 11 at 1:00 p.m. with a doubleheader against Bishop State (Alabama) at historic “Rags” Scheuermann Field at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium.
Delgado enters the new season as the #7 team in the country, according to the National Junior College Athletic Association’s preseason poll. The ranking marks Delgado’s thirty-sixth consecutive national ranking and fifth consecutive year in which the program has been ranked nationally to open the season. The 2017 Dolphins were also mentioned in Perfect Game USA’s top 50 JUCO programs and in Collegiate Baseball Newspaper’s preseason poll.
Last season, Delgado closed the season 37-16 earning its tenth Region XXIII title in eleven seasons, a South Central District Championship at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium, and a third consecutive (and fifth overall) trip to the Junior College World Series.
The 2017 roster is composed of student-athletes representing twenty-eight Louisiana high schools and thirty-one zip codes from across the state.
“We’re very excited to get our new season underway.” Adds Delgado Athletic Director and Head Baseball Coach Joe Scheuermann, who enters his twenty-sixth season as Head Coach who captured his 900th career victory last May in the Junior College World Series. “Our roster is composed of a mix of new and returning talent, all looking forward to a great season and a chance to compete for a fourth consecutive trip to Grand Junction.”
This year’s schedule includes twenty-five games at “Rags” Scheuermann Field at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium, which is marking its 60th season of operation. The Dolphins will make road trips across the Gulf Coast, making stops in Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida, including the program’s twelfth trip to Walt Disney World and the Disney Baseball Spring Training Invitational at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex from March 15-20.
Delgado will close the regular season with the best-of-seven conference series against Baton Rouge Community College for the Region XXIII Division I title and a berth in the South Central District Championship, to be hosted by the Region XVI champion in Missouri this May. The winner of the South Central District Tournament advances to Grand Junction, Colorado to participate in the 60th annual Alpine Bank NJCAA Division I Junior College World Series.
