BATON ROUGE, La. – Just two weeks into the season, the Nicholls State University volleyball team matched its longest winning streak from last year, as the Colonels earned a 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 28-26) victory at Southern Tuesday night at Clifford Seymour Gym.
The Colonels (4-4) defeated Southern (1-7) last Wednesday for their first win of the year, and after a tough loss against Air Force, have now won three straight.
Kali Schwartz and Brieanna Hill led the Colonels with eight kills each, while Ainsley Marroccoli and Lucija Barac finished with 14 and 10 assists, respectively. Marroccoli had a double-double with 13 digs, and Alexa Perry added 11.
Two runs in the first and second sets gave Nicholls enough room to eventually pull away from the Lady Jaguars, who dropped their sixth straight match. In the first
set, a kill by Stephanie Tobison capped a 3-0 run to give Nicholls a 17-13 edge en route to its six-point win. For the second, after the score was tied at 17-all, Schwartz and Hill delivered two kills each in the Colonels’ set-clinching 8-2 run. Schwartz had six kills in set on a .500 hitting percentage.
In the final set, Nicholls fell behind at 13-9 before battling back to even the score at 17. The squad found themselves facing match point at 26-25 before scoring the final three to win the set. Two attack errors by Southern gave Nicholls the advantage before Hill closed out the set and the match with her eighth kill of the night.
Nicholls hit .151 in the win and added four aces. Southern hit .128 and was led by Arabella Hall with eight kills.
Nicholls will continue its road swing this weekend with three matches in Jacksonville, Fla. at the Best Western Osprey Invite. Friday’s first match against host North Florida will be streamed live on ESPN3. For all links to live stats and video, please check back on geauxcolonels.com.
