Colonels prepped for Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships

NEW ORLEANS – The Nicholls State University women’s track and field program is set to participate in the 2017 Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships Friday through Sunday at Tad Gormley Stadium.

Adult: (3 days) – $20 • (Single Day) – $10
Youth (6-17 yrs.): (3 days) – $10 • (Single Day) – $5
Children under 5: Free

All students of Southland Conference institutions admitted free with ID.

Senior triple jumper Ashley Wheeler enters with the second-best mark in the conference at 40 feet, 3.5 inches. That jump earned first place at the Southern Miss Invitational, one of six podium appearances for her this spring.

Junior Sakinah Abdul-Aziz (12th) and senior Ky Thomas (14th) recorded personal bests of 18-9 and 18-7 3/4, respectively, in the long jump. Considering the 2017 outdoor season, Abdul-Aziz has reached the podium in the long jump four times, highlighted by silver medalist honors at the Louisiana Classic, McNeese Spring Time Classic and Southern Miss Invitational.

Others in the Top 15 of the league include junior Ciera Eugene, whose top javelin throw of 120-6 ranks 14th and senior sprinter Elexus Allen who brings 15th-fastest 400-meter qualifying time of 56.83.
