THIBODAUX, La. – Senior pitcher Daniel Goff tossed five scoreless relief innings but the Nicholls State University baseball program dropped a 4-2 decision to Stephen F. Austin Saturday night at Ray E. Didier Field.
Goff limited the Lumberjacks (26-22, 14-9 SLC) to just one hit and struck out five, the second most in an appearance this season. Senior Mike Hanchar tossed the first four innings and gave up four runs on six hits. The lefty’s record fell to 4-4.
The Colonels (24-24, 11-12 SLC) fell behind 2-0 in the first after a sacrifice fly by Josh Evans and RBI single from Alex Hrinevich.
Senior designated hitter Juan Givan drove in the next two runs on a fielder’s choice in the first and a two-out single down the left-field line in the third, tying the game at two.
An RBI groundout from SFA leadoff hitter Tyler Kendrick in the fourth proved to be the game-winner. Zac Michener hit a solo homer in the fifth for an insurance run.
Nicholls recorded five hits off Lumberjacks starter Trevor Kiminski in the first 3.1 innings but managed just one hit from that point on. SFA’s Will Vest picked up the win in relief, improving his record to 3-0 as he allowed one hit in 3.2 innings of work.
The Colonels had runners on first and second with two outs in the ninth, but Givan flew out to deep right-center field to conclude the contest.
The rubber match will take place at the Did Sunday on a 1 p.m. first pitch.
