FRISCO, Texas – McNeese Cowgirl pole vaulter Nicole Casper and Cowboy runner Olandis Johnson have been selected as this week’s Southland Conference Athletes of the Week – Casper garnering women’s field honors while Johnson capturing the men’s track award.
Both athletes etched their names in the McNeese indoor track and field record book with their performances at last Friday’s McNeese Indoor II meet.
Casper, a senior from Buna, Texas, broke her own school record in the pole vault event after clearing 13-feet, 5.25-inches. That mark also broke a Ralph Ward Complex record while also ranking Casper No. 1 in the Southland Conference and 19th nationally.
Johnson, a Vivian, La. Native, broke the school’s 800-meter record with a first place time of 1:51.81. That mark lifted him into the top ranking in the conference.
Also on Wednesday, the USTFCCCA released its regional track rankings and the Cowboys are in at No. 11 in the South Central Region and No. 2 among Southland Conference schools.
In the event rankings, Johnson is ranked No. 5 in the 800-meters; Christopher Graf is sixth in the mile run; and Oliver James and Nathan Jones are ranked 6-7 in the 3,000-meters.
In the women’s south central rankings, Casper is ranked No. 8 in the pole vault while Grace McKenzie is seventh in the pentathlon.
Both the Cowboys and Cowgirls will be back in action on Friday when they take part at the LSU Bayou Bengal Indoor.
