Cakes drop contest 5-3 in Omaha

Papillion, NE – Peter O’Brien hammered a two out solo home run in the seventh inning to lift the Omaha Storm Chasers past the New Orleans Baby Cakes 5-3 in a Monday matinee at Werner Park.

In the seventh inning of a tie game, Raudel Lazo allowed the homer to O’Brien. The Chasers added an insurance run in the eighth to secure a 5-3 lead.

Reliever Al Albuquerque earned the win for Omaha (6-5), pitching two scoreless innings. Lazo dropped his second game of the season for New Orleans (4-8). Malcom Culver earned the save.

The Chasers jumped out with a pair of first inning runs to take the early lead off New Orleans starter Stephen Fife. Omaha added a run in the third inning and led 3-0.

New Orleans battled back, sending eight batters to the plate in the fourth inning and scoring a pair of runs on RBI hits from Brandon Barnes and Moises Sierra. The Cakes tied the contest in the fifth inning with a second RBI hit from Barnes.

The Cakes dropped four of seven on their first road trip of 2017.

GAME NOTES: New Orleans been outscored 11-0 in the first inning and 31-7 across the first three innings.

UPCOMING: The Cakes open a eight game home stretch on Tuesday at The Shrine on Airline. New Orleans will start RH Vance Worley against Iowa Cubs RH Aaron Brooks. Radio: Fox Sports 1280 AM and the iHeart Radio App.

HOMESTAND: The New Orleans Baby Cakes host the Iowa Cubs, Triple-A affiliate of the World Series champion Chicago Cubs, for a four-game series starting Tuesday, April 18 at 7 p.m.

The homestand kicks off with Two For Tuesday presented by Coors Light, offering two domestic beers for the price of one, and Louisiana Seafood BOGO Ticket Tuesday, where you can bring in a receipt from any local Acme Oyster House or Another Broken Egg Café showing purchase of any Louisiana Seafood dish for buy one, get one free tickets. Wednesday is Businessperson’s Special where fans can enjoy a noon matinee at the ballpark with a game ticket, hot dog, and a soda or beer for only $13.

Thursday is Thirsty Thursday presented by Budweiser with 12-oz. domestic drafts for just $2 all night. The series wraps up on Friday night as the big top meets the ballpark during Circus With The ‘Cakes, featuring the Human Cannonball. A night of circus-themed fun will be highlighted by daredevil David “The Bullet” Smith propelling himself out of a 35-foot cannon from center field after the game.
