Cakes blow late lead, lose on wild pitch in extras to Aces

RENO – Christian Walker hit for the cycle and drove home five runs, but it was Ildemaro Vargas scoring from second base on a wild pitch that capped a bizarre game as the Reno Aces rallied Saturday night to defeat New Orleans Baby Cakes 11-10 in 12 innings.

New Orleans held a 10-4 lead as the Aces came to bat in the ninth inning. Reno managed to score six runs on two hits. The ‘Cakes pitching staff walked five batters in the ninth and a season high 10 total for the game.

Isaac Galloway hit a two-run home run and drove home four runs for the ‘Cakes.

Aces reliever Eric Davis earned the win and New Orleans reliever Victor Payano took the loss.

New Orleans (12-23) drops to 2-5 on the road-trip, and Reno (22-14) now leads the current series 2-1.

GAME NOTES: The Marlins promoted Justin Nicolino, who will start for Miami on Sunday against the Braves. New Orleans hitters struck-out a season high 14 times.

UPCOMING: The ‘Cakes wrap-up the eight game road trip on Sunday at 1:05 central time. New Orleans will start RHP Vance Worley (1-5, 4.42) against RHP Keyvius Sampson (3-1, 5.63) for Reno. Radio: WRNO 99.5 FM, Fox Sports 1280 AM, and the iHeart Radio App.
