Cajuns take down Peacocks, 6-1, to secure series win

LAFAYETTE, La. – The 15th-ranked Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns baseball team got another quality start from sophomore right-hander Nick Lee as the Cajuns defeated Saint Peter’s 6-1 on Saturday at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field at Russo Park to claim the squad’s third series of the year.

Lee allowed just one run on three hits in six innings to improve to 4-0 on the year. The Longville, La., native struck out five while allowing just one free pass.

Junior right-hander Wyatt Marks recorded his first save of the year and second of his career as he closed out the contest with three scoreless frames in relief. Marks struck out three and scattered two hits.

Senior first baseman Alex Pinero led the way offensively extending his hit streak to 10 games after going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, two runs and two RBI. Catcher Handsome Monica and left fielder Kennon Fontenot recorded a pair of hits in the contest as the Ragin Cajuns (8-4) outhit the Peacocks (0-3) 12-5.

Starter Anthony Assante took the loss for Saint Peter’s as he was tagged for four runs (two earned) on six hits in three innings of work.

The Peacocks grabbed their first lead of the series in the top of the second inning on an RBI single to right centerfield by third baseman Jake Regina to make the score 1-0.

The Cajuns answered in the bottom half of the second inning when Monica singled home Pinero on a ball hit through the right side of the infield to tie the game at 1-all. Later in the inning, third baseman Joe Robbins came home to score on a double steal attempt to give Louisiana a 2-1 edge.

Pinero extended the lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the third driving a two-run double down the left field line with one out.

Louisiana got an RBI single from Monica in the fifth and an RBI single from centerfielder Ishmael Edwards in the sixth to cap the scoring.

The Cajuns will look to claim their first sweep of the season tomorrow as first pitch is slated for 1 p.m. Sophomore left-hander Hogan Harris (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will make his first career start on the weekend and will face senior right-hander Kevin Soriano of SPU.
