HAMMOND, La. – With the score tied at 4-all in the bottom of the 11th inning, heavy rains rolled into the Hammond area forcing the matchup between the 13th-ranked Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns baseball team and Southeastern Louisiana to be suspended on Monday night at Alumni Field.
The contest will be resumed on March 29 when the two teams meet again at Alumni Field for a 6 p.m. game.
The Lions jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when third baseman Taylor Schwaner delivered an RBI two-out triple down the right field line.
The Ragin’ Cajuns broke into the scoring column in the top of the fourth inning on a two-out bunt single by right fielder Tyler Stover scoring designated hitter Steven Sensley from third. Sensley reached on a two-out triple off of the wall in left centerfield. After Louisiana loaded the bases, left fielder Ishmael Edwards was hit by a pitch to put the Cajuns in front 2-1.
The lead would be short lived though as SLU second baseman Carson Crites drove a solo blast over the fence in left field to even the contest at 2-all.
In the top of the tenth, Louisiana regained the lead on a sacrifice fly to right field by catcher Handsome Monica plating Zach LaFleur. Sensley extended the advantage to 4-2 on an RBI single back up the middle scoring third baseman Joe Robbins.
Southeastern Louisiana answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the tenth to knot things back up at 4-all. Webb Bobo brought home the first run of the inning on a bases-loaded single to centerfield with one out. Later in the inning, Scottie Sanders was hit by a Colton Lee pitch to bring home the tying run.
With two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning, the skies opened up making the conditions unplayable as the game would be suspended.
The Cajuns return to action tomorrow at 6 p.m. as the squad continues an eight-game road swing with a contest at Nicholls in Thibodaux, La. Following the matchup with the Colonels, Louisiana will head to Sam Houston State this weekend for a three-game, non-conference series.
Southeastern hosts Tulane at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field for Fireworks at the Pat. The Lions are scheduled to start sophomore left-hander Payton Robinson and Tulane will counter with right-hander Chase Solesky.
