Cajuns drop Warhawks to open series, 16-2

MONROE, La. – The ULM baseball team saw the visiting Ragin’ Cajuns post nine runs across the fifth and sixth innings on Thursday night on the way to handing the Warhawks a 16-2 defeat in the teams’ Sun Belt Conference series opener.

THE BASICS

TURNING POINT
-With ULM trailing by one run at 2-1 entering the fifth, the Cajuns plated four runs on one hit – a grand slam that just stayed fair down the left field line – after loading the bases via three walks. The visitors would go on to add five runs in the sixth inning on a hit and six walks in the frame.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Cajuns took the lead in the top of the first with a two-out RBI single back up the middle off the bat of Kennon Fontenot before adding to the advantage in the top of the second frame with a two-out solo home run by Handsom Monica.
-ULM cut into the lead in the bottom of the second when Tyler Cox led off with a single before Anthony Herrera single to put runners on the corners and set up Nate Reynolds’ fielder’s choice ground ball that pulled the Warhawks to 2-1.
-The game remained at 2-1 until the top of the fifth, when the Cajuns loaded the bases with three walks before Joe Robbins’ grand slam opened the game up. The visitors added five runs in the sixth via six walks, a hit batter and one hit – a two-run single back up the middle.
-The Warhawks pushed across a run in the bottom of the sixth when Spencer Hemphill walked and advanced around the basepaths before scoring on Cade Harper’s RBI groundout later in the frame.
-The Cajuns added a run in the seventh on an RBI double, two runs in the eighth on an RBI double and a run-scoring single, and two runs in the ninth on an RBI triple and a wild pitch.
-ULM finished with nine hits in the loss, with two hits each from Turner Francis, Bell and Cox, while Stone, Harper and Herrera all had one hit.
-Warhawk starter Trey Auger was saddled with the loss, allowing five runs on four hits with fiour walks and four strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings of work. Five ULM relievers combined for the final 4 2/3 frames.
-The Cajuns tallied 13 hits, with three players with two-hit nights – Zach LaFleur, Todd Lott and Robbins – while starting pitcher Gunner Leger earned the win after allowing two runs on seven hits over six innings of work.

UP NEXT
-The series with the Ragin’ Cajuns continues with another 6:00 p.m. first pitch on Friday night before a 2:00 p.m. start on Saturday afternoon on Senior Day.
