Big inning downs ULM versus Coastal Carolina on Saturday

MONROE, La. – The ULM baseball team held Coastal Carolina to runs in just three innings on Saturday afternoon, but the visitors used a six-run top of the second inning to take control of the game and hand the Warhawks a 10-5 loss in game two of the teams’ Sun Belt Conference weekend series.

TURNING POINT
-Coastal Carolina sent 11 batters to the plate in the second inning, using six hits – including six straight batters reaching – to open up what was a 6-0 lead at the time.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Coastal used a two-run double and a two-run single, along with an RBI double and an RBI single, in the top of the second inning as part of the six-run, six hit frame to take control of the afternoon.
-ULM responded with a four-run fifth inning, sending nine batters to the plate with six hits, started with a leadoff double by Nate Reynolds before he scored on Cade Stone’s RBI single. Stone then scored moments later on Turner Francis’ RBI single, while Chad Bell then reached with a base hit to set up back-to-back RBI singles from Spencer Hemphill and Cade Harper to pull the Warhawks to within two runs at 6-4.
-Coastal added to the lead with three runs in the seventh, using a two-run homer by Kevin Woodall and an RBI single from Peyton Isaacson, before posting a final run in the eighth on a solo homer from Billy Cooke.
-The Warhawks posted one run in the ninth when Blake Buckman opened the frame with a double down the left field line and scored on Anthony Herrera’s groundout later in the inning.
-ULM finished with 13 hits, with two hits apiece from Stone, Francis, Bell, Buckman and Tyler Cox, while Stone, Francis, Hemphill and Harper each notched RBI.
-Warhawk starter Chase Beal was saddled with the loss, going only 1 1/3 innings and giving up six runs on four hits with three walks. Trey Auger ate up five innings of relief, allowing three runs on eight hits with three strikeouts, while Tyler Schwaner and Chase Cater combined for the final 2 2/3 innings of the afternoon.
-Coastal Carolina was led by Cooke’s three-hit afternoon with three RBI, while Andrew Beckwith earned the win after allowing four runs on 10 hits over five innings. Austin Kitchen completed the final four innings to be credited with the save.

UP NEXT
-The series with Coastal Carolina wraps up with a 1:00 p.m. first pitch on Sunday afternoon. ULM then travels to Troy in SBC play next weekend in the final road conference series of the season.
