In a matchup of excellent teams in their respective classes, Brother Martin (15-5) hosts Salmen (15-7) in a non-district matchup at Bob Conlin Gymnasium Friday night. You can listen to the game live on WGSO, 990 AM and at

Salmen won the 4A state title under Carlin in 2009, lost in the 4A semifinals in 2008 and 2011 and in the quarterfinals in 2012 2014. The Spartans have been in the state playoffs every year in this century.

Brother Martin has won six state championships, most recently the 5A title in 2010. The Crusaders have also won state titles in 1970, 1971, 1974, 2004 and 2005.

In his 36th year as a head coach, Jay Carlin has a solid team once again. Carlin, who has won 848 games, has Salmen on a three-game win streak.

Senior Dietrick Stovall leads the Spartans, averaging 13 points and four rebounds per game. Salmen will be without senior forward Cameron Vickers, who has a sprained ankle. Vickers averages 10 points and six rebounds per game.

Guard Tyler Lally leads Brother Martin, averaging 13.8 points and 2.6 steals per game while Tre Swilling averages 11.2 points per contest. Freshman Davonn Moore averages 9.8 points and 3.8 assists per contest.

“Brother Martin is very athletic and will get into you defensively,” Carlin said. “They will turn you over frequently if you do not take care of the ball. We will miss Vickers. We have to value possessions and play well to have a chance to win on the road.”

Crusaders head coach Chris Biehl likes the way his team is playing. The Crusaders have won eight straight games.

“Our defense has keyed our offense during this good run,” Biehl said. “I was happy with our play at the St. Pius tournament in Atlanta and with our road wins at John Curtis and Rummel. We have to finish games better, play all four quarters moving forward. That is my only concern.”
