Steve Ceravolo has been part of winning baseball as a player and a coach.

At Hammond, Ceravolo is working hard to build the Tornadoes into a winner but may take some time.

The Tornadoes showed that they may be on their way to reaching their goal Saturday as they scored an impressive 7-5 win over Brother Martin in the Gerard Oubre Memorial Tournament at Destrehan.

Hammond jumped on Brother Martin early, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first and two more in the second inning to take a 4-0 lead. The Crusaders scored a run in the bottom of the fourth to cut the deficit to 4-1 but Hammond answered with a run in the top of the fifth and it was 5-1.

The Crusaders fought back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it 5-3 but Hammond came right back with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth and it was 7-3. Brother Martin scored twice in the bottom of the seventh but it was not enough.

Reed Roberts had two hits, including a double and three RBI to pace Hammond while Brent Williams had two hits, including a double and two RBI for the Tornadoes. Ryan Fussell was 3-for-3 with an RBI and Christian Reyes also had three hits for Hammond.

Fussell pitched five innings, allowing three runs on four hits, walking three and striking out three to pick up the win. Chase Morse pitched the final two innings. Jacob Cohen took the loss for Brother Martin, pitching five and two-thirds innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) on 11 hits, walking three and striking out four. Antoine Harris pitched the final inning and a third.

Brennan Stuprich had three hits, including a double and an RBI to pace the Brother Martin attack. Dominic Robert drove in a pair of runs.

The win avenged a 9-6 loss to Brother Martin on Mar. 4 for Hammond (4-12). The Tornadoes complete play in the tournament Sunday at 12:30 p.m. against Holy Cross at Destrehan.

Brother Martin (11-5) also lost to Central Lafourche 5-4 Saturday. The Crusaders open District 9-5A play Tuesday night at 7 p.m. against defending league champion John Curtis at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium in a game that you can watch live on SportsNOLA.com.
