J.L. Vangilder started bowling in the late 1950s while attending St. Aloysius High School. Since then, he has bowled in many local, regional and national tournaments and won a number of regional scratch events. During his career, Vangilder has bowled with and against the best bowlers in the city’s history.
Vangilder has 300 games a total of 20 times and eight 800 series, including a career-best 834. His first 300 was in 1971 at Paradise Lanes in Metairie, which is now Barnes and Noble. That was the only 300 recorded in the city that year. “Times have changed a lot,” J.L. explained.
Vangilder’s son Lenny is a vital contributor on many fronts at sportsNOLA and WHNO Channel 20.
