NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana’s Lacee Ancar and Catalin Fifea are the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Players of the Week in tennis for Feb. 13-19.
Ancar, a freshman from Harvey, La., and a graduate of John Curtis Christian School, won three singles matches and twice in doubles. Ancar won in doubles and singles to help the Gold Nuggets rally for a 5-4 victory this past weekend against NAIA No. 7 Indiana Wesleyan in the Grizzly Invitational at Lawrenceville, Ga.
Fifea, a junior from Bucharest, Romania, and a graduate of General School No. 31, won twice in doubles and three times in singles. He won in doubles in a 5-2 XULA victory against NAIA No. 3 Keiser at the Grizzly Invitational, and he won in doubles and singles in a 5-4 victory at Emory, ranked second in NCAA Division III. Fifea won singles tiebreakers in the second and third sets against Emory’s Adrien Bouchet, and he teamed with Pierre Andrieu for a 9-8 (7-5) victory against NCAA D3’s top-ranked doubles team, David Omsky and Jonathan Jemison.
The next XULA dual match will be for the women — 10 a.m. Monday against NAIA No. 4 Brenau at Mobile, Ala. Starting time was moved up six hours. The venue will be the University of Mobile’s Gerald L. Wallace Tennis Center.
The XULA men are 5-3 and ranked second in the NAIA, and the women are 3-5 and ranked 19th.
